Valentine's Day: An Annual Reminder to Buy Expensive Gifts and Feel Awkwardly Unloved
2023-02-14
In a yearly ritual of misery, Americans across the nation celebrated Valentine's Day this past weekend by purchasing expensive gifts for their significant others and then feeling awkwardly unloved in return.
“My girlfriend was really pleased with the diamond earrings I got her, but I could tell she was just being polite,” said Bob Gurney, a resident of St. Louis, MO. “I guess I should have expected it; I mean, I don't even know if she loves me.”
The annual holiday, which is said to have originated from a Christian martyr of the same name, is celebrated by couples of all ages. However, many single people dread the day, as it serves as a reminder of their loneliness.
“It's like the universe is taunting me,” said Tina Johnson, a single woman from Dallas, TX. “Everywhere I go, I see couples being all lovey-dovey and it just makes me feel like crap.”
Despite its depressing effects, many people still observe Valentine's Day, in the hopes that it will bring them closer to the one they love.
“I know it's a bit sappy, but I still believe in the power of love,” said Gurney. “Maybe this year will be different.”
